Brown Calls Brandy Woods Assisted Living Home

Often, families who are faced with making a choice for the care of their loved ones choose Ohio’s Assisted Living Waiver Program. Now available to area residents at the Brandy Woods Assisted Living (AL) facility, located near Woodsfield, is Ohio’s Assisted Living Waiver Program. Ingborg “Ingrid” Brown enjoys her new home at Brandy Woods and is thankful that her son, James Brown, Jr., found it for her.

Shown above at her home in the Brandy Woods Assisted Living (AL) facility, located in Monroe County, is Ingrid Brown shown with her case manager Anita Offenberger from The Area Agency on Aging 8.

“It can’t be better than here. It is like a vacation home,” said Ingrid. “I’m telling you there is no better place and the people here are just wonderful.”  Ingrid, who will be 83 years old in December, moved to Monroe County from near Columbus to be closer to her son. Her husband, James, Sr., is also now in Monroe County as a resident in the Care Center.

“It is so nice to have him near,” added Ingrid. “I can get my exercise and walk over to see James. He loves it here too.” Ingrid and James will celebrate 50 years of marriage this October. James met Ingrid while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. It turns out that his unit had a very famous soldier – Elvis Presley. Ingrid tells stories of meeting Elvis and having danced with him at beautiful parties.

Now retired from his career of 22 years as a drill sergeant, James and Ingrid are enjoying a peaceful life in Monroe County. Ingrid raised six children and enjoys 14 grandchildren. She still has two sons and a daughter in Germany.

Brandy Woods is the only facility located in Monroe County to offer the Medicaid Waiver program. It is one of only four facilities in the AAA8 eight-county region offering the option. Ingrid enjoys her apartment surrounded by photos of family and beautifully crafted hand-crocheted doilies.

“The food is so good here,” adds Ingrid. “They also do my laundry. A good man named Todd brings it to me all nice and folded. They also come help me with sweeping.” Ingrid enjoys going to the activities and has made fast friends at Brandy Woods. The facility allows her independence yet provides support when needed as well.

Assisted living combines a home-like setting with personal support services to provide more intensive care than is available through home care services. Assisted living facilities provide older adults with an option to nursing facility care that is both less expensive and less restrictive.

“The Area Agency on Aging 8 is proud to be a part of bringing additional Assisted Living resources to the region, especially a facility that will accept Ohio’s Medicaid waiver,” said Rick Hindman, Director of the Buckeye Hills Area Agency on Aging 8. “Providing residential services, the Medicaid waiver program affords individuals in the region another important long-term care choice in the options continuum.”

The Brandy Woods assisted living facility is located adjacent to the Monroe County Care Center, a 60-bed skilled nursing facility located at 47049 Moore Ridge Rd. in Woodsfield. The facility was made possible with $250,000 in grant funding from The Ohio Department of Development State Appalachia Grant Program. Licensed for 19 assisted living beds, five are certified for the AL Waiver program. The location includes one bedroom and efficiency units, as well as a central living room, country kitchen, private dining area, beauty shop and laundry facilities. It is staffed 24 hours per day.
