Caring to Help Others Program Offers Caregivers Reassurance

The Washington County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) offers challenging and rewarding volunteer opportunities for Washington County residents 55 years and older. One such new opportunity is found in the Caring to Help Others program in partnership with The Buckeye Hills Area Agency on Aging 8 (AAA8).

In Washington County, the RSVP volunteers are trained to staff a telephone reassurance option for seniors. Through regular telephone contact, volunteers and seniors will have general conversations and build friendships as well as provide a safety net of sorts for elders who need a routine check.

The program begins with a call to AAA8 at 1-800-331-2644. There, staff will help coordinate a free, in-home assessment and determine if seniors may be also eligible for other programs and community-based services.  This assessment will then refer seniors to RSVP if they are interested in the Washington County RSVP’s telephone reassurance program.

“The Caring to Help Others program will support the growing number of family caregivers across the county,” said AAA8 Planner Mindy Cayton. “The volunteers at RSVP are dedicated to using their time, talents and energy to making a difference. We are pleased they are partnering with us on the Caring to Help Others telephone reassurance program in Washington County.”

Cayton added that the program also has great value to the senior volunteers.

“It is proven that an additional measurable impact of volunteerism are the positive outcomes giving time fosters in the health and happiness of the giver,” noted Cayton.

Funding for the program is made possible by a grant awarded to The Buckeye Hills AAA8 from the Ohio Dept. of Aging’s Lifespan Respite Initiative grant, by the U.S. Administration on Aging, to support the development of volunteer respite programs in the region. While AAA8 serves eight counties, this grant is targeted to Athens, Hocking and Washington Counties to establish a best practices format and then expand to other counties.

The Buckeye Hills AAA8 is the area’s “front door” for information and assistance services. For more information or a free in-home assessment, call 1-800-331-2644.
