Medicare Part D Open Enrollment Begins Oct. 15
Find Resources to Help

With intense media coverage of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Area Agency on Aging 8 (AAA8) advises that there is a possibility that some seniors may become confused with their Medicare healthcare coverage.  The ACA health insurance marketplace is designed to help people who don’t have any health insurance.  Seniors have health insurance through Medicare.  The marketplace will not have any effect on their Medicare coverage.

Medicare Part D open enrollment for 2014 starts on Tuesday, October 15 and closes on Saturday, December 7. Open enrollment allows seniors the opportunity to review and update their current Medicare plan, including their Part D prescription drug coverage. New healthcare plans become available each year that may offer better coverage or save money, so it’s important for seniors to take the time to carefully review their options.

With more than 30 prescription drug plans to choose from in Ohio, Medicare Part D has a plan that should fit every seniors’ needs. The Part D program has increased access to medicines for millions and has led to an improvement in the health of many seniors.  Plus, average monthly premiums are approximately $30, an amount that has remained virtually unchanged for the past three years.  Part D also has Extra Help for those of limited means.

Free assistance is available for seniors to review their options, including Medicare, the Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program (OSHIIP) and AAA8. To learn more about the prescription drug plans that are available in our area, check out the Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare.gov/find-a-plan. Seniors can also call Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227), visit Medicare.gov to enroll, contact OSHIIP toll-free at 1-800-686-1578 or The Area Agency on Aging 8 at 1-800-331-2644 for assistance.

To learn more, AAA8 will host the Medicare Check Up Day on Monday, October 21 at 9 a.m. at the AAA8 office (1400 Pike Street in Marietta.) The 9 a.m. presentation will help attendees: learn about recent changes to Medicare; find out how the Oct.15–Dec.7 Medicare Annual Coordinated Election Period can work for you; get tips on how to enroll for 2014 coverage in a Medicare prescription drug plan (Part D) and/or a Medicare health plan; see if you qualify to SAVE an average of $3,900 on your prescription drug costs. Be sure to bring your list of prescription drugs to compare plans for 2014.

Counseling by appointment follows the 9 a.m. presentation: call 1-800-331-2644 to schedule.  Download a flyer
